Blog Series: Parameters of Airborne LiDAR Survey

Technology can be mind-boggling, but is it also complicated? Most technology (whether machines, algorithms, or programs) seems very complex and hard to understand. Looking closer, though, it is more like a system: components acting together in a certain way, which results in what we perceive as a piece of technology. As engineers, we learned to look at these parts, understand them, and know what role they have within the scope of the whole system.

With this series “Parameters of Airborne LiDAR Survey” I want to take a closer look at the different pieces that play together when doing LiDAR scanning. While my introduction to LiDAR tried to simplify the whole scanning principle, these articles will cover a more detailed look at the different properties and parameters involved in LiDAR.

The series will consist of three parts. Each will have a range of articles looking at a specific topic. I will link each article in the table of contents below as it appears. Come back to find more articles over time or subscribe to my newsletter to get notified whenever a new article is published.

Series Table of Contents

Part 1: Signal Properties

Within this first part, articles will look at the signal and its properties. Understanding the characteristics of the emitted signal will help you recognize what kind of signal you will need in order to achieve your surveying goals.

Part 2: Sensor Parameters

The second part of this series will be about any sensor-related parameters. Details within these articles will improve your understanding of how they work together and where the (mostly physical) limitations of your LiDAR system are.

Part 3: Aircraft and Flight Parameters

Last but definitely not least, I will write about flying and flight planning parameters. After mastering the signal and the sensor, reading these articles will allow you to employ your LiDAR sensor to its full potential.
